PIKNIC ÉLECTRONIK: DANCE YOUR ASS OFF IN PARC JEAN DRAPEAU
A NEW MEANING TO #SUNDAYFUNDAY
You know Summer has returned to Montréal when people start flocking to the 4 on their way to Jean-Drapeau ― it's only 5 minutes from downtown, so really there's no excuse not to. It's an island getaway like no other.
Yes, you read that right, Parc Jean Drapeau is an island and Piknic Électronik, the beloved electronic music festival which perfectly encapsulates Montréal's Summer 'joie de vivre', is the only thing that should be on your schedule each weekend starting in May.
Located on "Plaine des jeux", more than 100,000 native Montrealers and visitors gather outdoors to let their hair down for food, dancing and drinking all afternoon. It is festival season, after all.
Established in 2003, with electronic music at its core, Piknic knows how to please. An immersive experience in a truly expansive space, local and international DJ's and producers, as well as local underground artists, are brought in each week for unparalleled fun in the sun (and sometimes rain) delighting both music lovers and families.
The mind-bending array of beats that you hear pulsating from the two stages perfectly represents the subgenres and scenes you will come to find run deep throughout the veins of the city's music scene. If you're not a native this is the time of year you want to make the trek up north.
In addition to Piknic, I was able to get a look at the amazing local artists that make Montréal what it is. That's when you realize it's not about the headliners at Jean Drapeau, it's about discovering someone who you've never heard of and all of a sudden you're now listening to them at on the subway, or at home or in your car.
The sad reality of it being the middle of August is that there's only a little over a month left to the festival. Piknic Électronik is now worldwide, expanding to Barcelona, Melbourne, Dubai, and Santiago but let’s not forget where it all started.
This year marks the 15th anniversary and on the warm summer evening of Friday, September 1st as the afternoon progresses into the night you'll be sure to find OG and neophyte revellers flocking to the parc for sweet sounds and cool drinks.
If you're looking to travel this summer you now know you better book your next trip to MTL ASAP. Montréal is your #1 location, hands down.
As for me, I'll see you at Piknic's parallel winter party Igloofest in January.
Piknic Electronik is every Sunday from May 22 to September 24, 2017 on Parc Jean Drapeau. Tickets can be purchased online in advance for $13.50 (including taxes and fees), or on-site day of the event for $15 ($11 before 3PM) - and is always free for kids age 12 and under!
If one session just isn't enough Piknic also offers three types of passes for the Summer: the STUDENT PASS (student ID required) for $ 80, the REGULAR PASS for $110, and the all-new PIKNIC6X pass for $60, providing access to 6 Piknic events of your choice!
BIG THANK YOU to François from Piknic Electronik for making this experience possible!
