BLACK-OWNED ONLINE BUSINESSES: YOU CAN SUPPORT FROM ANYWHERE

Black-Owned Online Businesses

Travel isn’t the only thing I love. When I was 16 and had my first job I discovered my love of fashion, and spent pretty much all of my paychecks on clothes from Abercrombie & Hollister (I know, I know). As I got older I discovered other fast fashion brands including Zara, H&M and ASOS.

Now as someone in my 30s, who moves around and in the past has consistently ended up selling items I purchased from these stores on super sale because I never wore them, I am realizing that my mom was always right: quality over quantity.

I looked around my apartment and in my closet the other day and realized nothing I own comes from black owned businesses. It’s all from like Zara, H&M, Revolve and IKEA. Important lesson learned: my spending habits are not contributing to the black community.

Black people account for 15% of the population in the United States, and by that fact their businesses should also be 15% of what retailers carry and what we as consumers purchase.

It’s time I take my mom’s advice, and provide more support to black-owned businesses – businesses that provide step outside of fast fashion and provide quality across all sectors – food & drink, beauty, home, accessories, fashion and more. It’s important to support black-owned businesses in our own communities but she shouldn’t stop there.

There are so many amazing black business owners out there it’s time to start supporting them and follow that support through in the form of 15% of our purchases!

Here are 60 Black-Owned Businesses with online shops, that you can support no matter where you are located.

**This list will be updated as I find more great brands!**

If there’s one thing I love more than a vegan beauty brand, it’s a brand that is also easy to use for people who aren’t makeup artists. The Lip Bar is one of these brands. In addition to that, The Lip Bar has the most inclusive shades across eyes, lips and face. This is one of the struggles many black and brown people have, finding the right shade, which is what makes The Lip Bar so great: then deliver and then some.

When brands are able to personalize the products they offer, expanding their lines to address a variety of struggles people are having it’s always a home run in my book. Briogeo is one of these brands. Their clean & conscious hair care products starts with a hair quiz on the site. This is how you figure out what will work best for your needs and allow you to customize your routine. I made the switch to shampoo and conditioner bars months ago, because I didn’t like the way the liquids were making my hair feel, but Briogeo is a brand, whose all-natural ingredients would tempt me to switch back.

Trade Street Jam Co.

I love a good jam. In general I have stuck to strawberry all my life, but after doing a jam advent calendar I realized there are so many more yummy flavors out there. After doing Whole30 my awareness of the added sugar in literally everything was also heightened, and is now why I seek out brands, such as Trade Street Jam Co. which allow me to eat what I love and not be as concerned with the amount of sugar I am putting in my body. This is especially hard to do with jam, as sugar is typically a main ingredient, but Trade Street Jam Co. has mastered the art of low sugar, vegan jams. They also have a page full of recipes to take your jam goals even further.

Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey

I found out about this brand on Season 3 of ‘Somebody Feed Phil’. Not only is it black-owned, it’s also female-owned a rarity in the liquor industry. Uncle Nearest took its inspiration from the best whiskey-maker the world never knew, the first known African-American master distiller, Nathan “Nearest” Green, and also happened to be the most awarded whiskey brand of 2019. Now I’m not a huge hard liquor drinker, but when I do whiskey is my go-to.

McBride Sisters Wine

Do you want to support black-owned businesses? Family-owned businesses? Women-owned businesses? Look no further than McBride Sisters Wine. With an almost ‘Parent Trap’ like story, the McBride sisters were raised across the world from one another in the wine regions of Monterey, California and Marlborough, New Zealand, completely unaware of each other for nearly half their lives. Once they did finally meet, Robin and Andréa discovered their shared passion for wine creating the McBride Sisters Wine Collection to unite their parallel lives and passions, becoming the largest African-American-owned wine company in the United States. It’s this amazing story that has them at the top of my purchase list and has inspired me to pull together a list of black-owned wineries across the world.
